With $1 donations from each ticket sold, pledge challenges for three-point shots, and a jersey auction, the entire event became a shining success. The event raised more than $30,000 this year for breast cancer research and awareness and will continue during the season, and efforts during the past two years combined have raised more than $50,000. In this week's "Courtside with Coquese," fans will get a recap of Think Pink Day and get up close and personal with two current Lady Lions: Point guard Brianne O'Rourke, a junior from Pittsburgh who leads the conference in assists, and up-and-coming freshmen Julia Trogele from Devon, Pa. "Courtside with Coquese," is produced by WPSU-TV, central Pennsylvania's PBS-member station, which offers a unique behind-the-scenes look at one of the nation's top women's basketball programs. "Courtside with Coquese" takes viewers on an all-access tour of the Lady Lion program including road trips, locker room access, features, game highlights and player interviews. Lady Lion head coach Coquese Washington came to Penn State from Notre Dame, where she served as an assistant for eight seasons, most recently as associate head coach. During her tenure there, she helped lead the Irish to the 2001 NCAA Championship and amassed a 188-69 record with eight NCAA Tournament appearances, including four Sweet Sixteen appearances. One of the top recruiters in the country, Washington was instrumental in helping Notre Dame secure eight consecutive Top 25 recruiting classes, according to Blue Star Index, a feat only accomplished by two other programs in the country.
As a college player, she was a four-year starting point guard at Notre Dame and team captain. Washington played professionally from 1997-2003, playing for the ABL's Portland Power, the WNBA's New York Liberty, Houston Comets and the Indiana Fever. She played a key role for the Comets, leading them to a WNBA title in 2001. WPSU-TV's commitment to high-quality sports programming has brought the station Mid-Atlantic Emmys, Communicator Awards, and other honors. Each year, the station produces and distributes a diverse range of Penn State sporting events, including wrestling, gymnastics, basketball, volleyball, and sports magazine shows. In order to increase opportunities for fans to see the programming, WPSU-TV offers online streams of many of its productions, available at www.wpsu.org and www.gopsusports.com.
