Nittany Lion Wrestlers Jump to No. 7 in Latest USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team, under the direction of veteran head coach Troy Sunderland, moved up to No. 7 in the latest USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll as compiled and released by Intermat and viewable in full at www.intermatwrestle.com. Senior All-American Phil Davis (Harrisburg, Pa.) and sophomore Dan Vallimont (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) both hold down No. 3 rankings to lead seven individuals in the top 20.

Iowa continues to hold down the top spot, followed by both Nebraska and Oklahoma State. Central Michigan (4), Ohio State (5) and Iowa State (6) each moved up one spot while No. 7 Penn State moved up two spots. Wisconsin (8), Minnesota (9) and Northwestern (10) round out the top ten. The Big Ten, with six teams in the top ten, has nine ranked teams overall with Illinois (11) and Michigan (12) just outside the top ten and Indiana (21) listed as well. The Nittany Lions own victories over two of the top six teams, having downed No. 3 Oklahoma State and No. 6 Iowa State.

Davis is ranked No. 3 at 197 and Vallimont is ranked No. 3 at 157, with each wrestler holding down the same spot they did last week. Penn State has five grapplers ranked in the top ten and seven ranked overall. Sophomore Bubba Jenkins (Virginia Beach, Va.) is ranked No. 5 at 149, senior Mark McKnight (McDonald, Pa.) is ranked No. 9 at 125 and true-freshman Garrett Scott (Alexandria, Pa.) is ranked No. 9 at 141. Junior Phil Bomberger (Port Royal, Pa.) sits at No. 14 at 184 while sophomore David Erwin (Urbana, Ohio) holds down the No. 16 spot at 174.

 

 

Penn State moves is13-5 on the year, and finished the Big Ten season with a 5-3 record. The Nittany Lions will close out the 2007-08 regular season when they visit Lock Haven on Saturday, February 23, for an 8 p.m. match-up. The dual will be televised regionally on WHVL-TV.
