UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; November 20, 2006 - Penn State men's gymnastics assistant coach Kevin Tan won a bronze medal in the still rings competition at the DTB Pokal World Cup in Stuttgart, Germany earlier this month. Tan, a two-time NCAA rings champion and six-time All-American at Penn State, competes for Team Chevron.

The medal earns Tan a measure of redemption after a disappointing showing at the 2006 World Championships, held in mid-October in Aarhus, Denmark. Suffering from a bout with food poisoning, which sapped the Team USA captain of much of his energy and strength, he didn't hit his rings routine the way he wanted. However, Tan was able to post the highest score for the team on both the parallel bars and high bar.

"I trained so hard for so long and then things just got taken out of my hands," said Tan in an interview with Luan Peszek, Director of Publications with USA Gymnastics. "I tried to have a good attitude and do the best I could for the team."

"It was nice to end my season by winning a medal at the World Cup. It would have been bad to end my season after the World Championships."

Tan will now head back to the gym to train for the Winter Cup, an annual competition held in Las Vegas, Nev., scheduled for Feb. 8-10, 2007.

The Penn State men's gymnastics team begins its quest for an NCAA-record 12th national championship when it opens the 2007 season on Jan. 13 by hosting a dual meet with Army at Rec Hall.
