Mickey Shuler's first career reception is one he's likely to remember. In the 2007 season-opener against Florida International, Shuler grabbed his first career pass and ran it into the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown. He finished the game with four receptions for 54 yards to begin a strong season. Playing in every game on offense and special teams last season, with three starts, Shuler made significant strides, improving as a receiver and blocker. Shuler has good hands and speed in addition to his size, skills and work ethic. His efforts in the weight room have helped him add more than 25 pounds to his frame since arriving on campus. The dedicated and instinctive Shuler is coming off a great winter conditioning session and spring and is the top candidate at tight end entering the season. Shuler is one of several Nittany Lions with family ties to the program. His father, Mickey Sr., was a standout tight end at Penn State, lettering from 1975-77 before embarking on a 14-year career in the National Football League.

In the regular-season finale at Michigan State, Shuler grabbed a critical 16-yard reception on third down, in a drive that eventually would lead to a Rodney Kinlaw touchdown run. He also hustled downfield to save a punt from going into the end zone, with Rich Ohrnberger downing the ball at the Spartan one-yard line. Shuler saw action on 434 plays, led by 68 in the 31-10 victory over Notre Dame.
