Rick's sophomore season was his first as a regular and he showed just some of what he can do as he finished fourth on the team in hitting, one of four players to hit .300 or better for the Nittany Lions. He was also second on the team in extra base hits. His two home runs both came in key situations during the year and he also proved to be an outstanding situational hitter, as he got several other timely hits, particularly in Big Ten games. He also showcased his strong throwing arm in right field as he led the team in outfield assists. As good of a season as he had in 2007, the coaching staff believes that he has the ability to produce even bigger numbers in 2008, numbers that could lead to some All-Conference recognition or even more.

"Rick has continued to improve in all areas of the game and will once again man right field for us. Last year as a sophomore he had some big at bats and some big games for us during conference play. Marlin is a hard worker and gives maximum effort every time he's out on the field. He does not make excuses for himself. He is a tough competitor and it shows in the way he approaches and plays the game. Rick is the kind of player every coach would like to have playing for them and should be one of our top contributors this season."
