Nittany Lion Club- Frequently Asked Questions

Oct. 25, 2007

Did You Know?
Top-10 List for NLC Members

1. We Are ... a self-supporting operation!
Intercollegiate Athletics at Penn State receives no state support, University funding or student fees for annual operating expenses. Your gifts to the Nittany Lion Club go directly toward supporting our student-athletes and their programs in the following manner:

  • Scholarship support. NLC gifts first and foremost go toward the Levi Lamb Fund which provides over $9 million annually in grant-in-aid for our student-athletes;
  • Support for the Center for Sports Medicine;
  • Funding for the Morgan Academic Support Center;
  • Program support for all 29 varsity sports.

    2. Transfer of Accounts
    NLC accounts may only be transferred to a surviving spouse. A privately owned business may request a transfer to the owner's personal account when the owner sells their company (must provide legal documentation of the sales agreement). Individuals cannot transfer their personal accounts into a business account; they must start a separate account for a business.

    3. Pooled Memberships
    Should you choose to "pool" your membership with others, please be aware that the NLC will only recognize one individual from the group as the account holder of record. Only that person can receive NLC benefits, including tickets and points. While you may choose to pool memberships to save money in the short run, if the account holder is no longer able to remain a member, the benefits including tickets and point totals cannot and will not be transferred to the others under any circumstances. For the long run, it is advisable to have your own account.

    4. No Refund Policy on NLC Donations
    Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics depends upon private philanthropy to provide our student-athletes with the support they need to excel. Whenever possible, we recognize the generosity of our donors through special ticket, parking and event opportunities. The availability of these benefits will vary from year to year, however, and it may not always be possible to extend them to every donor on an annual basis. Therefore, gifts made to Penn State are not refundable.

    5. Allocation of Tickets
    While membership alone does not guarantee season or single-game tickets, one of the major benefits of membership is the opportunity to receive priority status for the purchase of football and basketball tickets. Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics believes in the importance and the power of a supportive audience for our athletic events. For this reason, the University is committed to filling season ticket requests first and foremost; tickets are allocated in the following manner:

  • The Season Ticket Renewal Phase (#1)
    This is the first phase of the ticketing process. Current season ticket holders, who have accounts in good standing, are offered the first opportunity to retain their tickets for football and basketball. It is at this time that season ticket holders indicate their intentions to keep their tickets or they may choose to release tickets. It is only following this phase that the ticket office can determine the number of tickets available for any given season, based on the non-renewals of the previous year's season ticket holders.

  • The New Season Ticket Phase (#2)
    Now that the number of available tickets is known, new season ticket requests can be addressed. These new requests will be allocated, based on NLC point totals, and the available tickets will be allocated in descending point order. Note: Current season ticket holders making additional ticket requests will have any additional season ticket requests addressed in Phase #2 based on NLC points. Their existing season tickets will not be compromised.

  • Single Game Ticket Phase (#3)
    Following the completion of the season ticket sales, any available single game tickets will first be made available to NLC members, in good standing, who have either not requested season tickets or have not purchased the maximum number of season tickets to which they are eligible according to their giving category. Priority is based on NLC point totals. Note: Single game tickets are NOT AUTOMATICALLY assigned to members who did not receive their season ticket request. Members MUST indicate their desire for single game tickets on their application. If any additional single game tickets remain after the NLC member single game sale, there will be a one day (date to be determined), online sale, for single game tickets for current members of the Penn State Alumni Association (PSAA). If any additional single-game tickets remain after the PSAA single game sale, they will go on sale to the public.

    6. How To Manage your NLC Account Information (address, email, etc.)

    a. Online (preferred), which allows you to make your own changes and look up your points and account status under "My Account" at www.nittanylionclub.com

    b. Via mail for requests for address changes, email changes, etc.

    c. In person in room 157 Bryce Jordan Center. Please schedule an appointment if possible.

    d. By phone, call 1-800-NITTANY

    Note: If you have your NLC account number available, your phone requests will be better served.

    7. Points Explained
    Priority status is enjoyed by Nittany Lion Club members for the purpose of procuring football and men's and women's basketball tickets and securing seating priorities. Members are given first priority in purchasing tickets based on their Nittany Lion Club point total. Points are assigned as follows:

  • 1 Point for each $50 contributed since becoming a member
  • 2 Points for each year of membership
  • 5 Points for Penn State alumnus/alumna (one time only).
  • 10 Points for lifetime members of the Alumni Association (one time only).
  • 10 Points for lettered athletes in a Penn State varsity sport at the University Park campus (one time only).

    Example A Nittany Lion Club member contributes $800 per year for five years, is a lifetime member of the Alumni Association and is a Penn Statealumnus/alumna:

    80 points - 1 point for each $50 contributed (16 points/year x 5 years = 80)
    10 points - 2 points for each year of membership
    5 points - Penn State alumnus/ alumna (one time only)
    10 points - Lifetime member, Alumni Association (one time only)
    105 points total

    8. Donating on Behalf of Someone Else
    It is allowable to make a gift on behalf of another member. The person making the gift will receive the receipt from our Office of Donor Services for tax purposes. However, the points will only be recorded on the account that the gift is directed to and only the account holder can receive the NLC benefits at that giving level. Note: Tickets must be purchased by the person on the actual account.

    9. Deadlines for NLC Memberships and Ticket Applications
    It is important that all NLC members abide by all posted deadlines in order for us to meet our needs for processing gifts, mailing ticket applications, assigning tickets and parking, and mailing them in a timely manner. Therefore, anyone missing a posted deadline is subject to having their seat location and/or parking space reassigned. Point totals used for assignment or re-assignment of season tickets will be based on the posted deadlines.

    10. Tax Information
    All contributions to the Nittany Lion Club are considered gifts to Penn State and are credited at full value for purpose of the donor's gift record at the University. However, a contribution to the Nittany Lion Club that entitles the contributor to purchase football and basketball tickets is 80 percent deductible as a charitable contribution for income tax purposes, according to Internal Revenue Code, Section 170(m). In addition, the Internal Revenue Service has ruled that the 80 percent portion of your gift is only tax deductible to the extent that it exceeds the value of the benefits you receive. The Nittany Lion Club has estimated the fair market value of the benefits described in this brochure, and that information is available upon request. You may call (1-800-NITTANY) to request this information.

    We welcome questions from our NLC members and strive to provide the best customer service possible. If you have any questions about the items mentioned above, or anything about the Nittany Lion Club, please feel free give us a call (1-800-NITTANY), send an email (nittanylionclub@athletics.psu.edu ) or drop by in person (157 Bryce Jordan Center.)
