Nittany Lion Mascot

The Nittany Lion Mascot is an essential part of Penn State's tradition and pride, which originated in 1904 during a baseball game against Princeton. Upon hearing their rivals' mascot, Harrison D. Mason announced that the Nittany Lion was "the fiercest beast of them all." Not only did Penn State win the game that day, but an image was created that would become both a symbol and legacy at the University for years to follow.

After numerous workshops, practices, interviews and a final tryout, the new Nittany Lion Mascot was recently chosen. The student that will represent PENN STATE as the next Nittany Lion mascot is Dave Johnson. Dave is from Bethlehem, PA. He is a graduate of Liberty High School where he graduated with high honors.

Dave is currently a senior majoring in kinesiology. Dave has spent the last three years as an active member of the Penn State Blue Band, Pride of the Lions Pep Band as a music section leader, and volleyball pep band. He is involved with the KINES club, PHETE, and currently holds bids for the Health and Human Development Honors Society and Mortar Board Honors Society.

While in high school, Dave participated in Varsity Ice Hockey, Track and field, baseball, and golf. He was a member of the marching band, orchestra, and first company, an elite wind ensemble.

Dave is an exceptional student and had a very impressive tryout. The communication skills and maturity he displayed during his interview, for the 11 member panel of judges, left us in awe. Dave's performance during the athletic portion of the tryout convinced the panel that this student is definitely the perfect fit for the next Nittany Lion mascot.
